Paragraphs about the character.
Holden:
Hi, I’m the protagonist and narrator of the novel. I’m a sixteen-year-old boy junior who has just been expelled for academic failure from a school names Pency Prep. I really don’t like the adult world; I think it’s because of how intelligent and sensitive I am. Don’t get me wrong, I do like life, but I tend to find the ugliness of everything around me unbearable. I try to protect myself from the pain and disappointment through my cynicism. I like to criticise people often, but everything I say is more aimed at me. I’m uncomfortable with my own weaknesses. In the book, I do show a lot of phoniness, meanness and superficiality…my inability to successfully negotiate the chasm leaves me on the verge of emotional collapse.
Ackley:
Hi, I’m Holden’s next-door neighbour…well, was, until he got expelled from Pency Prep. I’m a pimply, insecure boy with terrible dental hygiene. I spend most of my time in Holden’s room. I don’t think he minds, but even if he does drop hints that he wants me to leave- I’m completely oblivious to it. I tell elaborate lies to Holden about my sexual experience…but he doesn’t know that.
Stradlater:
Hello, I’m Holden’s roommate (old). I’m handsome, self-satisfied and popular. I don’t think Holden likes me much as he calls me a “secret slob”…all because I’m well groomed (unlike Ackley) I’ll admit it, my razor is disgustingly unclean. I’ll tell ya- I’m sexually active, and I’m quite experienced for a student…That’s why Holden also calls me a “sexy bastard”.
Jane Gallagher:
Hey there. I don’t really know Holden; I spent a lot of time with him one summer. Our families stayed in neighbouring summer houses in Maine. I’m extremely important to Holden I guess, I’m one of the few girls who he respects and finds attractive.
Phoebe Caulfield:
I’m Holden’s 10-year-old sister who he dearly loves. I’m 6 years younger than Holden but I listen to what he says and I understand him more than what most people do his age. I’m intelligent, neat and I’m a wonderful dancer. My childish innocence is one of Holden’s consistent sources of happiness. I show lots of maturity, and I even chastise Holden for hid immaturity! I do realise, even though I’m only 10, that Holden is his own worst enemy.
Allie Caulfield:
I’m Holden’s younger brother…I died of Leukaemia 3 years before Holden wrote his novel. I’m a brilliant, friendly, red-headed boy. I’m the smartest of the Caulfield’s. I guess I have tormented Holden with my death. He carries around my baseball glove, and he writes poems on it in green ink.
D.B. Caulfield:
I’m Holden’s older brother. Holden admires my short stories very much. Holden feels like I prostitute my talent of writing because I write for Hollywood movies; I don’t think I agree with him though.
Sally Hayes:
I’m a very attractive girl who Holden’s known for ages and dates for a long time. Holden claims that I am stupid, but I think that’s merely because Holden is sexually attracted to me. My taste and manners are a lot more conventional that Holden’s.
Mr Spencer:
I’m Holden’s history teacher. Holden’s a bright boy, and I try to shake him out of his academic apathy, but I don’t seem to be doing too well on that.
Sunny:
I am the prostitute that Holden hires through Maurice. I’m one of a number of women who Holden clumsily attempts to connect with.
Carl Luce:
I’m a student at Columbia. I was Holden’s student advisor at the Whooton School. I’m 3 years older than Holden, and I have a great deal of sexual experience. I try to get Holden to talk to me at our meetings about sex. This is because I was a source of knowledge of sex for younger boys at Whooton.
Maurice:
I’m the elevator operator at the Edmont Hotel…I persuaded Holden to spend an hour with a prostitute I know.
